If you are looking for a great place to get away that will give you stunning views and a fair bit of outdoor activity, then why not book a flight and travel from Geneva to Chamonix?
Chamonix is located in southeastern part of France, just on the Swiss border. It is part of the Rhône-Alpes Region and was first mentioned in 1091, when the Count of Genevois granted it to the house of St Michel de la Cluse, which had established a priory there by the 13th century. With the growth of tourism to the area in the 19th century, a new Comagnie des Guides de Chamonix was created in 1821 to regulate the mountain slopes. Though the area is famous as a winter sports destination (it was the site of the first winter Olympics in 1924), it is also an excellent escape during the summer months as well. While you are there, why not give mountain biking a go? Or if you prefer to grapple with your hands, there are few better places to mountain climb.
Mountain biking
If you are one of the hearty types that really likes a challenge, or are just interested in giving mountain biking a go, then travelling out from Geneva to Chamonix is an ideal holiday plan. Mountain biking is an outdoor sport where you ride specially made bicycles off-road, often along trails that take you up and over rough terrain. There are several types of mountain biking such as cross country, trail riding, downhill, freeriding, and jumping - all of which you can do here. The mountains have a great range of trails that are well-kept by the councils and maintained at the beginning of every spring. You can pick up pamphlets and maps from the tourist offices that can tell you more about which trails you can ride at what times of the year. The 15 mile-long valley boasts a vertical ridge of over 2,000 metres that is able to be navigated by mountain bike. And, if you are beginner, then heading from Geneva to Chamonix is a great time to take lessons and learn the basics in one of the most beautiful settings in Europe.
Climbing
If you are less inclined to hop on a bike and peddle your way uphill, but still want to get to the top of a mountain, then head out from Geneva to Chamonix to go hiking and climbing. With some of the largest mountains west of Russia, the region has a range of climbs that will suit everyone's ability. For those who are not hard-core climbers, you can test out the sport with lessons that will teach you the basics, show you the gear, and help you get going on the mountain. Or, if you are a seasoned climber looking for a challenge, Chamonix can offer that too. But you are well advised to take care even if you are a veteran climber; once you get up into the mountains there is often still ice and snow, even in the summer months, and at the tops there can be avalanches and high winds.
